The Herdwick Inn is extremely fortunate to be in a wonderful quiet
location in the North Lakes of Cumbria, in close proximity by magnificent
Lakeland Fells and beautiful Lake District scenery. There is so
much to do here no matter what your interests are.
Whether it is walking, boating, climbing, horse riding, paragliding
or mountain biking, there is something for everyone in the area.
The walking around this part of the Lake
District National Park is second to none. Blencathra, Helvellyn,
and the Northern Fells of Caldbeck
are all in close proximity. For the less energetic, there are lovely
walks around the shore of Ullswater and along the River Eden, as
well as lower, easier peaks such as Gowbarrow Fell, Souther Fell
and Great Mell Fell.
The Ullswater
Steamers are a great way to take in the beauty and splendour
of the High Street and Helvellyn fell ranges, as well as the Lake
itself - pickups at Pooley Bridge, Glenridding and Howtown.
Aira
Force, one of the highest and most beautiful waterfalls
in the Lake District, is only a few minutes drive away, close to
the shore of Ullswater.
The gentle, rolling scenery of the Eden
Valley, with the North Pennines in the distance is a great
place for more gentle walking and cycling.
If you prefer a more relaxed pace, the north Lakeland towns and
villages provide countless places to explore and you will never
be far away from places to eat and drink. The market towns of Keswick
and Penrith are only a short drive away and the historic border
city of Carlisle
with its Castle,
Cathedral
and Tullie
House Museum, approximately 25 minutes away.
There are many footpaths leading out of the village so you can
leave you car behind, and for those on two wheels, the two long
distance cycle routes nearby, namely the C2C
(Coast to Coast) and the Reivers Route are not far away. We are cyclist friendly and have secure storage for bikes available.
And should the weather turn wet, make use of our local knowledge
about such local visitor attractions as the award winning Rheged,
Greystoke
Castle,
Hutton-in-the-Forest and the Theatre
by the Lake in Keswick. There is also Keswick Spa &
Pool, and Rookin
House Activity Centre offering quad biking, archery, horse
riding and many other outdoor pursuits, all within striking distance
of Penruddock.
See the Cumbria
Tourist Board website for more information about this beautiful
area of the Lake District. Penruddock really is an ideal base for
exploring many parts of the North West of England.
